Why the climate matters
Outdoor cameras in Dubai deal with long hours of direct sun, high summer temperatures, fine dust and sand, and humidity, especially near the coast. None of these stop a well-chosen camera from working, but they shorten the time between “installed” and “footage is no longer clear”.
What typically goes wrong
- Dust film on the lens or dome blurs the image and causes glare and haze at night when infrared light reflects off it.
- Spider webs and insects near infrared cameras trigger false motion alerts and block the view.
- Heat stress on outdoor power supplies, connectors and cameras mounted in full sun.
- Moisture getting into poorly sealed outdoor connections, especially in humid coastal areas.
- Hard-drive wear in the recorder, made worse by hot, poorly ventilated cabinets.
Choose and install with the climate in mind
- Check the camera’s operating temperature range and ingress rating (for example IP66/IP67 for outdoor use).
- Where possible, mount cameras under eaves or with a sun shield rather than facing direct sun.
- Use weatherproof junction boxes for outdoor connections.
- Place the recorder in a ventilated, shaded space; avoid closed cupboards with no airflow.
A practical maintenance checklist
- Clean lenses and domes with a soft cloth and suitable cleaner, never abrasive materials.
- Check each camera’s image in daylight and at night.
- Confirm every channel is recording and play back footage from several days ago.
- Check hard-drive status in the recorder and note any warnings.
- Inspect outdoor connections, junction boxes and cable entries for heat damage or moisture.
- Check the recorder’s date and time; wrong timestamps weaken footage as evidence.
- Review user accounts and update firmware where appropriate.
How often?
Many systems benefit from a professional check once or twice a year, with lens cleaning more often for dusty or exposed sites. Commercial premises covered by SIRA’s Preventive System Manual are required to hold an annual maintenance contract with a SIRA-registered company.
